Guess What? Abstract Photos

Today I had a special request (from my father) to send another "Guess What?" photo. I chose three recent abstract photos to share and to let you guess what they are.

You all did so well with the mushroom photos I sent a while back, these should be easy for you.

Enjoying Point PLeasant Park

Today I am sending four photos taken when I visited Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, this summer.

The person in the first photo was sitting on a picnic table reading. The fog was just offshore, but the person didn't seem to mind. I was walking along the trail when I heard a lot of noise behind me. When I saw all the runners coming towards me, I took a few photos of them. I photographed another man who was watching the sailboats in the fog.
There were lots of people there that day and I photographed quite a few of them "enjoying the park".

Food Photos

I am sending two food photos today.

The apples grew on our apple tree and we had a few delicious apple pies from them.

I photographed an ear of fresh corn during the summer and had this photo chosen for Photo of the day since that time. I really liked the colours and texture of the corn.

Fall Photos 1

To be honest the "Signs of Fall" photos I am sending this morning were taken in Nova Scotia in mid-August. While there, I noticed a lot of trees there that were changing colour. There were many trees that had a leaf or two that were changes, but there were quite a few on which all leaves were changing.

I imagine the leaves on most trees there are changing colours now and think of how colourful they must be. I guess leaves are starting to change in the north-eastern US as well.

People on this list who would like to send Fall photos to our International Photography Gallery can send them to
mqpphotos@gmail.com.

Flowers

This weekend I photographed "signs of autumn" and will share a few of the photos over the next while. Today I am sending two photos of flowers that are still blooming in late September.

The red one only started to bloom recently and in the first photo you can see all the little flower buds as well as the flowers. The plant is about 2 feet high and flowers are 2-3 inches in diameter. I don't know the name of the plant so if any of you recognize it, let me know. Thanks in advance.

The nasturtiums are still blooming but as the days get cooler, they are starting to die off. This was the first year we planted nasturtiums and were pleased with the bright yellow and orange flowers that added colour to our yard. We collected LOTS of seed that we plan to plant again next year.

Sunrise

One morning in early August, while in Corner Brook, I got up early and went for a walk. My goal was to capture the sunrise. You will see from the photos today that I was not disappointed.

The first photo was taken with my 100-300 mm zoom lens. Using this lens enables me to capture great colours, but provides a narrow view of the sunrise. I changed lenses and photographed the same scene with my 14-40 mm lens. I metered off the brightest part of the scene, which still gave nice colours, but the golden sunrise looks quite different.

I walked a little farther and saw that the clouds above looked very interesting and worth taking a photo or two. The third photo shows one view I took, again with the wide angle lens.

Dragonflies

Earlier this summer I sent photos of spiders and today I am sending a few photos of dragonflies that appear to be three different species, a red, a green, and a darker colour with bright green eyes.

The greenish one landed on a deck railing and stayed still long enough for me to take a few close-ups. The red one landed on a couple of different trees, but I was unable to get very close.

The last photo shows a close-up of the colourful eyes of yet another species of dragonfly. As I was walking through the woods, I heard a strange sound. I looked around and saw two dragonflies that were mating and I was able to take a couple of images including a few macro photos.

The first four photos were taken in Nova Scotia, but the last one was taken on the Avalon Peninsula, near Holyrood.

Petty Harbour

Today's photos were taken in Petty Harbour, not far from St. John's. I was driving through the town after photographing the sunrise in Cape Spear a couple of weeks ago. I saw several boats heading towards the harbour so I drove to the wharf and waited for the boats to come in.

The first photo shows the harbour looking in from the head of the wharf that protects the narrow entrance to the harbour. As the first boat entered the harbour I quickly focused on a point on the water where I thought the boat would pass. It was too bright to look directly for very long so I had to shoot the photo very quickly. You can see a guy standing on the deck in the first image of a boat. When the second boat approached, I assumed it would pass by the bright reflection of the sun in approximately the same spot so I focused first, then photographed the boat as it approached.

These were difficult photos to capture for a number of reasons:

  • the scene was VERY bright and it was difficult for me to see
  • it was hard on the eyes
  • the boats were moving, making it difficult to compose the image
  • it was difficult to judge whether the camera was level
  • it was difficult to capture the exact moment the boats passed through the reflection of the sun on the water

Cabbage Butterfly

The cabbage butterfly tends to get overlooked by many photographers because it is so common. I took a photograph of a single butterfly that had landed on a yellow flower (may be a variety of hawkweed). A few moments later, two butterflies that appeared to be mating flew by and landed on a leaf. The white one was doing the "flying" for the both of them. As I got closer they took flight again and flew away.

The third photo was cropped from a larger photo to let you see more details. To be honest, I don't remember seeing the black spots on the wings before, but when I looked up info on the net, I saw them there as well.

If anyone has photos of any species of butterflies that they would like published in the International Photography Gallery at Mary Queen of Peace (
http://www.mqp.k12.nf.ca/photo) feel free to send them with a short explanation to mqpphotos@gmail.com. Grade 4-6 students maintain this gallery.

Shorebirds, Nova Scotia

During the summer I photographed a variety of birds. Today's photos show a flock of shore birds (they are too small in the photo to for me identify) that took flight for a short time then landed on the beach not far from where I was standing. I took these three photos as quickly as I could. (approximately 1 second since I can shoot 3 per second with my camera).

If anyone can identify the birds in the photos let me know. They were photographed in Nova Scotia in mid-August.

Quilt - Women in the Fishery

This morning I am sending a photo of a quilt hanging in the Fishermen's Museum in St. Vincent's. It was created by students in an Entrepreneurial/Crafts class and donated to the museum about 10 years ago. I am also sending a photo of what the quilt is about. In case you can't read the text on the second image, I added an enlargement to make it easier.

I was in St. Vincent's on Sunday and took quite a few photos in the museum. A few are sure to make my Photo of the Day.

Man in Mountain

In the Humber Valley, not far from Corner Brook, there is a mountain with the shape of a man's face. It took me a while to see it, but since I did, I can always find it easily. I have been with groups of people and there is usually at least one person who can't see it.

This morning I am sending four photos. The first two are photos of the mountain. See if you can see the face in the mountain before looking at the last two images which have an ellipse around the face.

Seascapes, Bay Roberts

WOW!! Over 75 people made a guess that the photos I sent yesterday were mushroom (and/or fungi) and they were right. Congratulations. I really didn't think so many of you guys would guess correctly. Next time I'll send a harder one.

The first photo today is a photo of one of the mushrooms. Can anyone identify this species?

The other three Photo(s) of the Day were taken on Saturday in Bay Roberts. The waves were spectacular and I took over 300 photos of the waves as they crashed against the shoreline. I am always trying to capture the "perfect wave".

Guess What?

This morning I am going to let you "think" about today's photos before telling you what they are. If you would like to make a guess just click the link below and tell me what you think the photos are and why. The only hint I am giving is that I took the photographs on Friday past.

I starting photographing the objects for one reason but ended up taking them because of the interesting shapes and textures.

I am looking forward to your guesses.

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Delicious chocolate dipped strawberries are the subject of today's photos. I often take photos of food and couldn't resist getting my camera when the colourful plate was brought to the table. I liked the white, red and brown with a little green. I took several photos before everyone ate the bunch.

Every time I look at these photos, I can almost taste the strawberries.

Neddies Harbour, Bonne Bay

Both photos this morning were taken in Neddies Harbour, located near Norris Point in Gros Morne National Park. I saw a boat on the side of the road and stopped to photograph it. Because of all the distractions, I decided to shoot only part of the boat with its bow "pointing" towards the shed in the background.

The second photo is a closer view of the shed. Like many old sheds and fishing stages in Newfoundland and Labrador, this one is no longer perpendicular. If you look closely, you will see that the ocean in the background is level but the edge of the building appears to be tilted backwards a little.

Feel free to check out my other photo galleries at www.lanephotography.com.

Roses, Gros Morne National Park

While in Gros Morne National Park earlier this summer, I photographed white roses in the early morning light. I shot several photos and tried a couple of different compositions showing the Tablelands and Woody Point in the background.

To capture the first photo, because it was a bright morning, I focused and metered off the white flowers. If I had metered off the green leaves, the white roses may have been too bright and washed out.

For the second photo, I focused on the flowers then recomposed the view to make the flowers less dominant and part of a beautiful landscape.

Tulips

Tulips Tulips are a sign of spring, but my tulip gardens are under a foot or two of snow. It will be a while before we see the beauty of the...
