Moose

Today I decided to share a few of photos of a moose that I photographed in Gros Morne National Park in mid-August, 2001. This particular moose was eating alders that were growing along side of the main highway through the park. I have nearly 300 images of this moose.

The sequence shows the large animal as it wandered along the side of the road towards me. You can see that the moose was quite aware of me so I was a little nervous as it continued in my direction. While I am not afraid of moose, I knew that this was a large, wild and unpredictable animal that could be quite dangerous if provoked or frightened. Luckily, since this moose lived in the park, it was probably used to lots of people watching it from time to time.

Alders

The alders growing around my property in Holyrood are probably the most photographed alders in the world. Because they are so plentiful around Newfoundland and Labrador, alders are considered a weed species by many people. However, I always liked the alders and photographed them in all seasons.

Today I am sharing 3 photos of alder cones covered with frost and snow. I looked up and liked the clear blue sky as a background with no distractions. To capture the second image, I composed the shot with frost-covered greenery in the background. The third, taken later in the winter shows snow-covered cones. Note that the early morning light makes the brown cones look "warm" compared to the snow.
The last two images show the cones with two different backgrounds. I like the last one better because the background is less distracting.

Photo Art

Today's photos are new ones from my "Photo Art" series. Feel free to look at over 100 Photo Art images on line at: http://lanephotography.com/painted/photo_art/photo_art_1.htm . Just follow the links at the bottom of the page.

The first photo was taken in Holyrood. I liked the interesting design and colours in this image: the horizontal and vertical lines of the wood, the one white board, as well as the metal bar and horseshoe-shaped piece of metal.

The second image was made in Salvage, Bonavista Bay. I liked the fishing stages, especially the red "store" which dominated the image.

The third image shows art on a shed door in Maddox Cove, near Petty Harbour. The last time I drove down this way I noticed that the little shed had been moved, but the art was still on it after 20 years.

Shapes and Textures

Thanks for the interesting comments regarding the Delicate Designs series. Today's photos could fit into a Design theme as well but these are man-made, not natural, things.

Most people don't think about the fact that everything that is made by humans has been designed. When you look around you, take notice of everyday objects and make a mental note of the design of each. Don't discriminate between objects - everything's a subject for this exercise! Feel free to make photographs and share them with students by sending photos to mqpphotos@gmail.com

The first photo is a close-up view of a pair of jeans and the second two are macro imaged of the threads in two different sweaters. These photos would make excellent backgrounds for web pages about clothing or producers of clothing.

Delicate Designs 2

Today I am sharing two more photos taken during Sunday's snowshoe hike. I noticed that many of the delicate grasses were literally "drawing" arcs in the snow - in places where the tip of a blade of grass was touching the snow, an arc was formed when the grass was being blown back and forth with the wind.

The third and fourth images were taken several summers ago at Salmon Cove Beach in Conception Bay. The grasses growing on the beach were making similar marks in the sand.

Delicate Designs

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day here in Holyrood: sunny and warm for late February. I went for a snowshoe hike for a couple of hours and enjoyed the time outside. During the walk, I photographed the grasses and plants that are nearly covered by snow.

I liked the delicate designs created by the weather-beaten plants which obviously are not delicate or the winds, rain, ice, snow and sleet would have broken them. But despite the harsh weather since last fall, they are still intact.

The first two photos show the curved tops of a group of plants (may be what's left of a fern from last summer) in a bog on back of my house. I zoomed in closer to give a better view. As I crossed another bog later, I photographed several types of grasses that, because of the rounded reeds, made interesting and abstract images.

Sunrises 3

This will the last in the Sunrise series for a while.

Today's photos were taken on the same foggy morning as the ones I sent yesterday. The fog adds to the quality of the lighting - and the final image!

If you would like to view a full length video of Florida Sunrises (around 6 minutes), I have uploaded one to You Tube. Just click the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTKzp7PQ_YA. I also have a shorter Sunrises/Sunsets video on line and people have made several interesting comments about it. Here's the link if you are interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mD66RGdDag&layer_token=8e4b9c7c1336d8d5

Sunrise 2

If you, like others on my list, can't figure out how I can take 300-500 photos every day on my early morning walks, especially since I have visited Florida several times, I am sharing further examples today.

The first two photos show a species of very tall grass some of which is nearly 20 feet in height. The lighting in these photos is muted because of the thick morning fog. Like most sunrise photos, these should give viewers a peaceful feeling.

I saw a blue heron resting on a rock in a small pond. It has been my experience that these birds are skittish and usually fly away as I approach them. I took a few photographs and tried to move closer and, as I expected, it flew away.
I have uploaded a couple more silhouettes of birds to my Blog - Click Photo of the Day Blog - to see these photos

Sunrise

I have shared several photos of Florida Sunrises over the past few years. A typical morning for me when I am in Florida is to get up between 6 and 7 AM and as the sun begins to rise I take my camera and start to walk. I photograph each sunrise for the next 3 - 3.5 hours then return home for a fresh coffee, a little breakfast and a chance to download the photos I took during the morning (usually 300 - 500 images). It doesn't matter that I have done this many times, I enjoy every morning walk and still find lots to photograph.

The first two photos show two views of the same scene. I liked the golden colours of the water so I zoomed in closer and made the second image. Even though it is nothing more than reflections of the morning light with the silhouettes of the banks of the small pond, I still get a peaceful feeling when I look at the photo.

As I approached water sprinklers I noticed that the backlighting highlighted the jets of water. When I checked the photos later, I realized I had captured individual jets of water and could see how they changed over a period of 1 second.

White Ibis

Yesterday Winter sent the worse storm so far this year. High winds and 25 cm (10 in) of snow meant a couple of hours of moving snow - which is good exercise.

Today, I chose to share photos of Florida Birds. The first photo shows a white ibis that was feeding in a small body of water. There weren't many reflections in the water so it looks very dark.

I saw a white ibis sitting on top of a tall tree with the moon in the background. . At first I thought they were all the same specie of bird, but when I looked through the long lens I realized the other birds were cattle egrets. The third photo was taken seconds later after a fourth bird landed on the tree.

Winter

Today's photos of Winter were taken January 31, 2004 during an early morning drive to Clarenville. As the sun rose, the lighting on the snow and trees was very nice so I stopped along the side of the highway and took a few photos.

The light in the early morning and late evening is usually great for making photos. Even though it was mid-winter, a very cold morning and a lot of snow, I get a "warm" feeling when I view the images. A few years ago, a person on this list stated that some of my winter images made her feel warm instead of cold. This is probably due to the lighting in the early morning.
