Hawaii

My wife and I visited Hawaii in the summer of 1980 and I took at least 1 roll of 36 slides per day. I can only imagine how many photos I would have taken if I had a digital camera back then!

The first two photos this morning were taken from my hotel balcony. The sunset on the first evening I was there. The next day, I photographed surfers just off Waikiki Beach with my 500mm lens. The third photo was taken near Sandy Beach Park on the island of Oahu. The fourth image shows a view of the Pacific Ocean from a cliff of volcanic rock. The Bus was the name of Oahu's bus line. I used the buses a lot because for fifty cents I was able to travel anywhere on the island.

Potatoes

Earlier this year I shared photos of the vegetables growing in my garden. The spinach and peas are harvested and frozen, and the lettuce is gone for the year. We've been eating carrots and potatoes for a while.

Yesterday I harvested a row of red potatoes, washed, then cooked some of them. Of course, they are delicious. No chemicals or pesticides were used on the garden.

Black & White Images

Today's black & white images came colour slides. In the old days of film, I always carried two camera bodies, one with colour slide film and the other with black and white film - usually Plus X (ISO 100) or Tri X (ISO 400). Some photos work better as b&w and it is easy to convert images. If you are using Picasa 3, there is a tool for editing photos including converting images to b&w.

The tree in the first photo is located in Holyrood. I liked its shape and the wooden fence. The second photo shows part of an antique record player that I photographed in the late 90s. The photo was taken inside with available light from large windows. Feel free to search my Blog to find additional photos of this antique. The third photo was taken on a foggy but very calm morning as a fishing boat appeared out of the fog, stayed in view for a few minutes, then slowly disappeared into the fog again.
The winter forest shows one of the trails I used first when I moved to Holyrood in the early 80s. It was clear cut in 2000 and is just beginning to grow back now. The iceberg was photographed near Cupids, Conception Bay in 1988.

Sunsets

I know many of you enjoy sunset and sunrise photos. The images I am sharing today are from scans of slides I took 20+ years ago. The second image shows the silhouette of a jet as it was approaching Love Field International Airport in Dallas, Texas. The other photos were taken near Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Blue Flag Iris

As you know, throughout the summer I shared photos that were virtual tours of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, but I did continue to photograph wildflowers, trees and forest animals during my hikes. The blue flag iris grows wild all around my home in Holyrood. It is a very beautiful wildflower that adds colour to the wetlands that I hike over most days in the summer. Of course, I photograph these flowers every year!

Flowers

I always take advantage of photo opportunities to photograph freshly cut flowers and those I am sharing today were taken near my kitchen window without a flash. The second image was cropped from the original (uploaded to my Blog) and shows a close-up view of the flower.

Heart's Content Lighthouse

The lighthouse in Heart's Content stands atop a granite cliff overlooking Trinity Bay. I like the paint job on this lighthouse - sort of like an old-fashioned barber pole. When I took these photos, there were no other visitors - quite a comparison to the hundreds that visit Peggy's Cove every day during the summer. If you are travelling in the Trinity Bay South area, I suggest you add Heart's Content lighthouse to your list of places to see and photograph.

Iceberg - Witless Bay

Photographing an iceberg is always exciting, but when I saw several kayakers headed towards an iceberg in Witless Bay, I wanted to capture a few images that showed the massive size of an iceberg.

The first photo shows the iceberg from a distance and it is difficult to tell its size because there is nothing to compare. When you see how tiny the kayakers look, it gives you an idea of the size of the berg.

Doors

As most of you know I have been photographing doors for 40 years and have quite a collection. Today I chose three images that show doors on yellow houses. You can see that the paint jobs vary on each building.

Inspired by the comments sent yesterday about the photos of "old" buildings that no longer exist, I searched through some old photos and found these. I know that the house in the third image is gone now and a new house was built on the same spot. The last two were taken on Water Street in St. John's several years ago. I am not sure if the boat is still part of the entrance. As I look through my old photos, I will continue to choose a few to share with you.

Changes

Today's photos were taken over 25 years ago, long before digital photography came on the scene. In those days I used slide film most of the time and had to wait 2 - 3 weeks to see the photos I took.

The first photo was taken on Outer Cove in the early 80s. I imagine there have been a lot of changed there in 30 years. The second photo was taken in Triton, Notre Dame Bay around 1979. I think both old buildings in the background are gone now. The shed (and maybe the house) in the third photo are also gone. A couple of fishing stages and boats along the river bank in Petty Harbour still stand, but I don't think they are all still there.

Tulips

Tulips Tulips are a sign of spring, but my tulip gardens are under a foot or two of snow. It will be a while before we see the beauty of the...
