L'Anse aux Meadows 4

The boat referred to in yesterday's post was still photogenic even though it was partially dismantled. You are looking into the past when you view these images: the boat is based on actual boats used by the Vikings, the fence and ocean - all much the same as it was a thousand years ago.

The seal pelt drying on the pickets of the fence also made an interesting photograph. Seals were hunted by the peoples who inhabited this area before the Vikings arrived on the beaches of L'Anse aux Meadows so it made sense that the Norsemen who travelled the northern ocean would hunt seals for food and clothing.

The door shown in today's post is under construction and will probably have decorative extensions similar to the others on the longhouse in the near future. The wooden barrel reminded me of a butter churn, but I doubt the Vikings brought domestic animals with them.

Feel free to check out the photos I took at L'Anse aux Meadows last time at: http://www.lanephotography.com/lance%20aux%20meadows/lance%20aux%20meadows%20introduction.htm
