L'Anse aux Meadows 7

This morning's photos are a continuation of the series I took inside the longhouse at the L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. There were several wooden barrels, one of which had a pile of furs on it. The Vikings stayed in this area for ten years or so and lived off animals that inhabited the land and sea. Like the natives that lived on the island of Newfoundland at the time, they utilized all parts of the animals they hunted.

The Vikings arrived in Newfoundland nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus "discovered" North America in 1492 and John Cabot landed at Cape Bonavista in 1497. I can barely imagine the abundance of fish in the ocean and wildlife on the land at that time.

Feel free to check out the photos I took at L'Anse aux Meadows last time at: http://www.lanephotography.com/lance%20aux%20meadows/lance%20aux%20meadows%20introduction.htm
