Brigus South

Brigus South

Brigus South is another community located along the Irish Loop on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula. Like many other communities I've shared photos of over the last 55 days, you have to take a short trip off the main highway in order to see the community. I always enjoy my visits to this community and have many photos of the town and beautiful scenery over a 30 year period. If you plan a trip around the Irish Loop, add Brigus South to your list of places to visit.

Thornlea

Thornlea

Thornlea is a small community located in Trinity Bay along the Osprey Trail. I've visited this town a few times and have shared photos on three previous occasions. ou can check those by clicking the following link: http://kbrucelane.blogspot.com/search?q=thornlea.

When on photo shoots I often try wide angle shots that show only a thin sliver of land in an image that is mostly sky. The first image is the result of one of those experiments and though it doesn't show much of the community, it does give you an idea of the height of the hills. The others show scenes related to the fishing industry.

Port de Grave

Port de Grave

Today's photos were taken in Port de Grave, Conception Bay in late December, 2009. As you can see, there was hardly any snow, which is becoming the norm around here in recent years. Like other communities in this area of the province, it has a long history dating back to the 16th century. As you can see from the photos of all the boats, this community is still an important fishing community despite the closure of the northern cod fishery.

Riverhead

Riverhead

Today's photos were taken in Riverhead, St. Mary's Bay which is located along the Irish Loop on the Southern Avalon. When I reviewed the photos taken in this community I realized that I have more photos of houses than anything else. This is probably because the main road isn't really near the ocean. I chose images today that show the harbour and am saving the other images for a Houses Series later this year.

I made several photos of the colourful boat in the first image and will share them in a Boats Series later this year. I liked the colours of the boat against the foggy background through which you can barely see the other side of the harbour. The second photo was taken on a much clearer day and shows a few houses that are located near the water. The third photo is a closer view of one of the houses with a reflection in the harbour.

Green Cove

Green Cove

Green Cove is another of those tiny communities located off the main road on New World Island, Notre Dame Bay. Last week I shared photos of several other small communities in this area including Herring Neck, Cobb's Arm, Too Good Arm and Salt Harbour.

I've been sharing photos of communities since New Year's Day and this post marks the 50th community in the Communities of Newfoundland Series. I have just a few more to share before taking a break for a week or two. Based on the feedback I've received from around the world, you have been enjoying this series a lot. This series has also motivated me to revisit several communities again; hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph a few next summer.

Ferryland

Ferryland

Ferryland is a fairly small community with a population around 550. It is located along the Irish Loop on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula and is a historical community where visitors can view an ongoing archaeological dig as well as a museum with items dating back to the 16th century.

Today's photographs were taken on a beautiful clear day in 2006. I've been there fairly often and on a few occasions it was so foggy I could hardly see the beautiful seascapes in the area. On this day, however, I was able to make several interesting images of the waves crashing against the rocky cliffs. I'll share a few of those images in a new Seascapes Series I am planning to share later this year.

I plan to continue the Communities of Newfoundland Series for another week or so, then take a break for a couple of weeks. My Photo of the Day will then return with a brand new series.

Tulips Tulips are a sign of spring, but my tulip gardens are under a foot or two of snow. It will be a while before we see the beauty of the...
