St. John's

St. John's

Last week I visited the downtown area of St. John's to make photos.  It was a nice day and since I wanted to photograph people, I wandered from eastern Duckworth Street, down to Water Street, then back again.  It took about an hour to walk that distance. I plan to share some of the images taken during that walk over the next few days.

It was an interesting experience because the last time I did this was early one Sunday morning in December 2001.  At that time I wanted to photograph the buildings without cars and people.  The downtown certainly has changed over the past 12 years!  There are no vacant buildings, businesses have come and gone, there are more pubs and restaurants, there are several new hotels, some buildings have been demolished and others have been given a facelift.  Today, the downtown area is much more vibrant and active - mainly because of the booming economy caused by the offshore oil industry and its many spin-offs.

A while ago I started to revise my St. John's Galleries and will make an effort over the next few days to accomplish that goal. When it is complete, I will share the links with you.

Random Passage 10

Random Passage 10

The Random Passage Site is a small town built as a movie set for the award-winning mini-series Random Passage which was produced in 2002.  Since then it has been operated as a tourist destination that has been visited by thousands of people from all over the world.  Today's photos are wide shots that show the village and how the buildings are laid out in relation to each other.

The images I've shared over the past 10 days will help you imagine how hard life was for the early settlers on the island of Newfoundland. As I said earlier in this series, this was my second visit to this site and I have created a NEW web site that features photos from both visits.  You can view the 7 New Galleries at: http://www.lanephotography.com/random_passage/random-passage-intro.htm

A few of you have said that you have read the book and seen the movie and others have said that they will read the book as a result of this series.  Feel free to share today's photos and the link to my new galleries with family and friends.

Random Passage 9

Random Passage 9

Today's photos were taken inside the houses and sheds at the Random Passage Site.  Even though the salt fish around the site looks real, it is man-made.  All other items in the buildings look like real antiques, however, I suspect they too were specifically made for the movie set.

The photos over the past 3 days were taken with my Canon EOS digital camera.  As I started to make the photos, I took out the Nikon P500, which I usually use for inside photos.  However, after a quick test with the Canon, I realized that by using an ISO of 1600 (my old camera does not adjust the ISO automatically) the light from the windows was sufficient and the photos were good, so I continued using it in all buildings.

Random Passage 8

Random Passage 8

Today's photos were taken inside the school house on the Random Passage Site. The crutch was certainly basic, but probably served its purpose at the time.  The abacus was made from sea shells and worked quite well.  The slate was actually a piece of rock and the chaulk was a piece of soft white rock, both found locally.  It certainly wasn't like the Back to School stuff you see advertised these days!
