Happy New Year

Happy New Year

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

This morning I have been scanning slides from 1987 and coincidentally photos of fireworks taken from Holyrood beach were the first I came across.  I set up my tripod and opened the shutter for several seconds to capture more than one explosion of fireworks at a time.

The first photo was taken in 2004 when the fireworks were in a different location.  I added text to that one and another from 1987.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Houses and Outbuildings 3

Houses and Outbuildings 3

December 15, 2014 had a foggy start to the day and as I drove through the Town of Holyrood I stopped to make a few photos of houses as the sun started to burn off the fog.

The first house is probably one of the older homes in the community and I have taken so many photos of it over the years that I could probably devote a gallery to it. The third house stood out because it looked so bright through the dissipating fog.

Later that morning the fog lifted entirely and I decided to drive to the Placentia/Argentia area of the Avalon Peninsula.  It was sunny all the way until I reached the town of Dunville.  By the time I got to the location of the abandoned US military base the fog was so thick that I could hardly see a thing.  It was the same in Jerseyside and Placentia.  The fog seemed to lift as I drove back through Dunville so I decided to check Fox Harbour and Ship Cove, but Fox Harbour was also foggy so I turned around and headed back towards the TCH.

There were three houses in Fox Harbour that caught my attention so I made photos of them through the fog.  As you can see a couple of them are in bad shape.  I photographed them because they may not be there next time I head down that way.

Houses & Outbuildings 2

Houses & Outbuildings 2

Today's photos were taken in Conception Harbour and Colliers on December 21, 2014.  One barn has a roof that has caved in and another looks like it is well maintained and still used.  The houses next to both are also shown on my Blog.

The old grey house with 2 yellow chairs in front was very interesting and I shot it from a couple of different angles. If anyone from Colliers knows the history of this house, I'd like to know.  For example, when was it built?  The yellow chairs are modern which leads one to believe that someone lives in it, or at least visits for a while from time to time.

The last photo is an interesting garbage box in front of a home in Colliers.

I recently updated both my Colliers and Conception Harbour Galleries;  Check them at:

Houses & Outbuildings

Houses & Outbuildings

For the next couple of days I will share photos of houses from communities in Conception Bay Centre.  On December 21, 2014 I drove from Holyrood to Colliers and made photos of several houses and outbuildings in each community.

The first three photos are of a house in Holyrood that I have photographed several times over the years.  I don't know much about the history of the place, but I think it has been abandoned for 30 or more years.

The photo of a house with bright yellow siding was taken in Chapel's Cove. I went back through my files and found a few photos of that house and several outbuildings on the property, most of which are gone now.  I will share those later.

I think the barn in the next photo was in Harbour Main.  It looks like it is well-maintained compared to many I see around the province.  The shed with hand-written "Roof Broke" sign is decorated for Christmas and was also in Harbour Main.

I photographed several barns and houses in Conception Harbour including those in the last three images.

Feel free to share with family and friends.

Bay Bulls 2

Bay Bulls 2

I know that sometimes it may seem like I only photograph old and abandoned houses, but often I will photograph new houses as well.  I shoot the old ones because I have learned that they tend to disappear rather quickly and I will have captures a tiny piece of history.  I even photograph houses and outbuildings that are in bad shape because it is a record of that moment in time.

As you can see from the first image, there is a section of Bay Bulls that has large, modern houses on a lake.  The other photos show a few of the older style homes that caught my attention during my visit on December 5, 2014.

Feel free to share with family and friends.
