Blue Jays 2

Blue Jays 2

As a few people pointed out yesterday, blue jays are a bit more aggressive than the gray jays, but they don't come too near the house.  Only one of the five that come here daily is brave enough to come near if we are outside.

Blue Jay

Blue Jay

There is a family of blue jays living around my house.  Since last summer, five of them visit most days.  A couple of times there have been many more, but the ones living here usually drive them away.

These jays are a lot more skittish than the gray jays that live around here as well.  However, I am attempting to get them to be less fearful of us.  I've been putting out food and standing around waiting for them to come for it.  Most times the gray jays will take it and the blue jays will follow them.  However, there is one that seems to be less afraid.  It will fly in if I am standing there (around 10 ft away) and take the food.  Then I stay in the same spot but move the food a little closer.  I am hoping that it will get more used to me.

Chipmunks 3

Chipmunks 3

This is the last of my chipmunk photos for now.  I created Facebook and Google Albums of the photos I have shared on my Blog.  If interested, check out the links below.  If you don't use Facebook, you can view the same images in my Google+ Album.

Chipmunks 2

Chipmunks 2

When I photograph a bird or mammal, I usually try to show its features from a variety of angles.  Of course, often the animal does not cooperate fully and moves away.  The chipmunks here don't run away immediately and after a few times, I was able to show it from several angles.

Chipmunks

Chipmunks

I am sharing photos of wildlife I photographed in my yard.  Another animal that was introduced in the 1960s was the eastern chipmunk.  They were released in Butterpot Park, around 3 miles from here, but haven't been as successful as the red squirrel.  IN fact, I heard a wildlife biologist state on radio that we don't have chipmunks on the island.  However, we have had them around here for many years.

Usually, I see them in early spring, but not all summer.  There were a couple here last week, but I haven't seen them since.  Cats tend to catch chipmunks easier than squirrels, so the cats around here are probably keeping the population down.
